About Us

Well Hello There!

Welcome to Sunflower and Zucchini! I'm Sarah — the illustrator, designer, and founder behind every piece in the shop. My husband Joshua and I started this small business to share our love of endurance sports through thoughtful, original designs.

Every design is hand-illustrated by an actual human (that's me!). No AI, no templates, no shortcuts — the same put-in-the-real-miles ethos that endurance sport is built on. And everything we make is built to last.

About Our Name

So glad you asked! Sunflower and Zucchini are the nicknames we put on our race bibs. I'm the Sunflower — cheerful, optimistic, and always looking forward to the next race. Joshua, a tall, introverted master gardener and the quiet to my loud, is the Zucchini. Together we tackle everything from marathons to starting a small business to raising two awesome kids.

The Inspiration

We came to long-distance running — and later triathlon (just me; Joshua still refuses to get in the water… I'm working on it) — during the dark days of COVID, when we needed to lift our spirits and move our bodies in equal measure. With our then-3-year-old in a jogging stroller, our then-6-year-old on her bike, and a fair amount of bribery to keep one kid seated and the other pedaling forward, we trained for our very first half marathon. Once we had that race under our belts, we were hooked. As a lifelong swimmer, I made the jump into triathlon the following year, and eventually talked Joshua into a full marathon (after swearing never again, he promptly signed up for another). These days training is just part of our daily life, and even our kids are in on it — as cheerleaders and as athletes themselves.

I believe endurance sport isn't about the time on the clock. It's about dedication, resilience, heart, and the community that carries you through — the same things I pour into every design, one hand-illustrated line at a time. So when someone asks about your tee, your mug, or your hoodie, I hope it's an opening to talk about sport and nudge one more person to get moving — whether that's walking a 5K or signing up for their first tri.
